About

A register, not a dealer

Footnote Fleet is a reference for people who own, are restoring or are thinking of buying a boat built by Baja Marine. It holds what the builder published about each model, with the source of every figure, and a trip log written up from what owners send.

The builder, briefly

Baja Marine built performance boats in Bucyrus, Ohio. Its own history page of the late 1990s says four owner/employees assembled the first design in an abandoned roller skating rink, that the Carrera 240 of 1978 was its first big high-performance boat, and that the 1979 Carrera SS Bowrider won a Powerboat Magazine "Boat of the Year" award.a A 2007 trade report names Doug Smith as the company's founder and former president and dates his first Baja boat to 1971.b In March 2008 Brunswick, then the owner, announced the sale of Baja Marine to Fountain Powerboat Industries of Washington, North Carolina, and said it planned to end production of Baja boats in Bucyrus by the end of May 2008.c The BAJA trademark is now registered to Iconic Marine Group, LLC.d

What this site is not

Why "Footnote Fleet"

Because every figure here carries a footnote: the builder's own page it was read from, archived and linked. The name is the site's own; the boats are Baja Marine's.

Who runs it

Independent owner resource. Not affiliated with Baja Marine or its successors.
